The Cottage (or Y Bwthyn (pron. er Buthin) was built in 1880 and is one of the original dwellings of old Penderyn. It was built as a quarrymans cottage at a time when limestone quarrying was in ascendance to provide raw materials to power the iron foundries of the Merthyr Valley. The original quarry can still be seen some 5 minutes walk from The Cottage along the old mineral line railway path heading towards Sgwd Yr Eira (Falls of Snow) waterfalls. The current Hansen quarry, in its new location, is still very much in use providing limestone sub-base and tarmac.
The Cottage has been sympathetically restored with many of it's original features being maintained and incorporated including the inglenook log burner fireplace and stone spiral stairs, although the old 'outhouse facilities' have now been joined to the property for a somewhat more pleasant experience! A perfect cosy little bolt-hole for two it is ideally situated for exploring the Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons National Park with Sqwd Yr Eira a 40 minute walk away, Pen Y Fan mountain a 10 minute drive and of course Penderyn Distillery just a 10 minute walk.
