The Cottage is surrounded by the incredible Brecon Beacons, and beautiful walking routes.
Staying at the Cwtch is the perfect place to spend a Brecon Beacons break away. This characterful and contemporary cottage is the ideal destination for couples looking for an escape to the Welsh countryside, whilst well-positioned for walkers and within driving distance to the waterfalls country. A retreat for alfresco dining under the sunshine or the stars during the warmer months. Step indoors and store your muddy walking boots in the hallway. Venture into the kitchen, well-equipped for a self-catered stay, where you can rustle up and enjoy a hearty meal over a glass of wine or why not step out and walk some 50 yards to the Red Lion for a meal and drink. On your return you can cosy up in the sitting room in front of the wood-burning fire, with a Smart TV for entertainment. When sleep calls, a sumptuous double bed awaits, climbing upstairs to complete your nightly routine and catch some must-needed rest.
The Cottage (or Y Bwthyn (pron. er Buthin) was built in 1880 and is one of the original dwellings of old Penderyn. It was built as a quarrymans cottage at a time when limestone quarrying was in ascendance to provide raw materials to power the iron foundries of the Merthyr Valley. The original quarry can still be seen some 5 minutes walk from The Cottage along the old mineral line railway path heading towards Sgwd Yr Eira (Falls of Snow) waterfalls. The current Hansen quarry, in its new location, is still very much in use providing limestone sub-base and tarmac.
The Cottage has been sympathetically restored with many of it's original features being maintained and incorporated, although the old 'outhouse facilities' have now been joined to the property for a somewhat more pleasant experience! A perfect cosy little bolt-hole for two it is ideally situated for exploring the Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons National Park with Sqwd Yr Eira a 40 minute walk away, Pen Y Fan mountain a 10 minute drive and of course Penderyn Distillery
just a 10 minute walk.
